There is something inherently humorous about seeing men dressed up in tutus. I am not sure what it is, possibly the unlikely nature of seeing it, sort of like how elephants are often depicted dancing about dressed in tutus, there is just something about it that brings a smile to the face. The tutu party brings a lot of smiles. I have some hardcore male friends who are loath to the idea of donning a tutu, some even refuse to attend and others do so grudgingly and seem none too happy about being there, especially if I pull out the camera anywhere near them.

I don’t get their reluctance, for one thing- everyone there is wearing a tutu and everyone realizes that it is somewhat silly to see you wearing one; that is sort of the point. Another strong point in my favor is that while gentleman may appear somewhat silly wearing tutus, ladies look downright sexy and gorgeous wearing them and they come out in droves for the annual tutu party, looking great and happy to mingle. Being happily married, I am only an observer but if I were a single guy in Key West, I would have been first in line at the Tutu counter.

The party is actually multiple parties as the night progresses as the crowd evolves from the early party crowd through various permutations into a late night throw down that matches anything you would find in South Beach, Vegas or LA. It is an amazing a fun thing to witness and made doubly so by the fact that it is almost still an exclusively local event. Last year, Kathy & I made it through almost the entire thing, we cut that short by a few hours this year as we both had to work early on Wednesday, but it was still one of the best and most enjoyable evenings of the year.

The official definition of Tutu- noun, plural tu·tus [-tooz; French -ty] a short, full skirt, usually made of several layers of tarlatan or tulle, worn by ballerinas. The definition certainly was on full display that Tuesday, though other than a couple of dancers that I know of, the vast majority of people wearing the things were not ballerinas. Perhaps the idea of being ballerina-like, even for a night was enough.

And while ballet might not have been on the agenda, dancing certainly was as the party was packed with writhing bodies and dancing fools both on the moody darkened upstairs dance floor and the downstairs, outdoors dance area that was just as crowded. It was some sort of fun and wonderful. Colorful, energetic and frenetic, yet you could still find areas where you could drink and converse in relative peace- the best of both worlds as it were.

Fantasy Fest week was already an unqualified success and it was only Tuesday, Thanks again for all involved with the Zombie and Tutu events which have breathed new life in to what was fast becoming a fairly rote party schedule and making the early portion of the Fantasy fest week more desirable and fun than the conclusion.
