The Masquerade March took a few hours to complete, the thousands of people stopping at various guest houses along the way for libations and meandering down the streets. It was great to see so many of our friends and their great costumes. It was starting to get dark as we finally hit Duval Street and the huge street fair that was going on there.

A large group of our friends had a great walking group called Dengue Night Fever in which they were dressed as disco mosquitoes followed by a mosquito control helicopter that featured a built in stereo blasting disco tunes. The recent cases of Dengue Fever, a tropical mosquito-born illness that hadn’t been seen in the US in years prompted their choice, another example of locals making light of local issues which characterize the march.

The street fair stretched most of the length of Duval and featured all sorts of vendors and food booths. It seemed bigger than ever and the crowd was massive by the time we got there. Once downtown, the locals blend into the out of town masses and form one massive crowd of often drunken revelry.

Kathy & I stopped in at La Trattoria for a drink to escape the throng, then grabbed a quick bite from a street vendor before heading over to the Green Parrot where the Dengue Fever crew had parked their helicopter for an impromptu street party.

That is where we stayed most of the remainder of the night, hanging out outside the Parrot alternately listening to the Dengue-Disco and the band playing inside the bar, Bill Blue & the Nervous Guys.
