The Green Parrot
There is an entirely different ambiance to the daylight hours of Goombay Festival. The daylight hours during Saturday bring out a totally different crowd and the focus is much more of the various vendors and food offerings as many locals and tourists head down to shop, eat and catch up with friends.

For the past few years, I have made it a Saturday afternoon tradition to take our dog India down for an afternoon walk through the Goombay party. India & I share a delicious meat on a stick and she loves scrounging about on the ground for bits of yummy food that people have dropped. The crowds at night are a bit too intense for her, but she does great during the day.

This year, even the day crowd was pretty massive. I think the excellent weather had a lot to do with the increase in people. India & I had a great time wondering the fest, catching up with friends and enjoying the food. We headed home for a quick turnaround, dropping off India and a quick shower before heading back for night two at Goombay.

Before heading down, we received a surprise visit from our friend Janine who made a last minute decision to head to Key West for a Goombay weekend visit from her home in Madison Wisconsin. Janine lived here for years before relocating and it was a nice surprise to have her show up to join in the Goombay festivities.

Soon we were back at Goombay headquarters at Blue Heaven for another night of frivolity. The crowd on Saturday night seemed just a bit lighter, but there also seemed to be a lot more of our friends out and about. The wonderful weather continued and it was another practically perfect Key West evening.

As Goombay wound down, we all headed back over to the Green Parrot for another late night performance by the dynamic band Suenalo. The massive crowds spilling out onto Whitehead Street the previous evening led to the placement of barricades along the street to keep the crowd contained, it was the first time that I had ever seen that at the Parrot, it worked though as the crowd was corralled into the bar to watch the band.

Finally, it was over to Virgilio’s for the night cap, where a good crowd was gathered watching our friend Rob perform. Tons of friends were there and it was a great ending to the wonderful Goombay weekend.
