Farewell Massachusetts

July 21, 2018

Farewell Massachusetts

We stayed all day at the music festival in Greenfield before heading back to Kathy’s father’s place in Marshfield where I had one final day before heading home to Key West. Kathy stayed the remainder of the week before flying home, but I needed to get back to work so I enjoyed the final day in Marshfield as much as I possibly could before departing.

Kathy’s Uncle Bobby and Aunt Candy came down to spend the day with us in Marshfield, we were scheduled to take her dad’s boat out, but unfortunately the New England fog rolled in thick and never really broke completely so those plans had to be scrapped, though we did enjoy the day hearing Bobby’s plethora of cool stories while hanging out at the house in Marshfield.

We spent the rest of the day going to the beach, which was a little windy and cool so we ended up swimming in the river again after hanging out on the beach long enough to determine the sand blasting we were taking from the wind-blown sand just wasn’t all that pleasant. The beach was beautiful though and the river was great as well as the water was much more inviting and secluded from the breeze as well.

Later, we drove over to Scituate to drive around and visit the waterfront including the very cool Scituate Lighthouse. The lighthouse is beautiful and active. Since first opening in 1811 at the opening of Scituate Harbor, the lighthouse has had a rich and interesting history.

Located on a rocky jetty called Cedar Point, that just out into the opening of the harbor, and the grounds are open to the public year round for exploration. The area was crowded with locals and a few tourists taking advantage of the beautiful setting to just watch the water, the sunset and the beautiful harbor as boats went back and forth.

For my final meal in Marshfield, Kathy hosted one of her famous Lobster feasts at the house. We had thirteen people on hand for the meal and as always we headed over to the Brant Rock section of Marshfield to the Brant Rock Fish Market to pick up the fully prepared lobsters and a few pounds of yummy shrimp.

Like most of the Brant Rock area, the fish market is yet another throw back in time. Old School New England come to life. The quaint little area is like something out of central casting for quaint New England waterfront and the seafood market is still run the same way it has been for literally decades. You place your order and it is hand written in pencil on a tiny pad of paper and ready when you are told to pick it up, cash only as they still have not caught on to the new-fangled things known as credit cards. I loved everything about the place, from the weathered older gentleman who prepared everything, to the unique, but not unpleasant smell of the place to just the way it looks. Not to mention that the seafood is super fresh and absolutely delicious.

The dinner was another rousing and fun success. A final gathering for me at least with Kathy’s family and friends and the food was as always terrific. So cool to spend such quality time with friends and family. It was good to get home to see our cats and dog Jack again. Thanks so much to our friend Aine for housesitting for us and keeping the house and pets in such a happy state.
