School’s Out



The end of the school year marks a big change in our day to day life. Summer in Key West moves along at an entirely different pace than the rest of the year. It is a languid, wonderfully slower pace than the frenzy that takes place during season. There is of course a lot less going on, and far fewer people on the island which help, but there is something else that makes summer one of my favorite times to be in Key West.

It is indeed pretty hot here, but then again it is actually cooler than many places up north and the ocean breeze makes it bearable. I especially enjoy walking at night, the air full of the fragrance of blooming frangipanis and night blooming jasmine and the beautiful lightning displays that accompany the fast moving summer storms that frequently pass through. It is a magical time.



The end of the school year at the Preschool gives Kathy a bit more time to work on the yard and garden and it gave the parents and students the chance to celebrate with an end of the year party at Ft. Zachary Taylor state park beach.

We have been putting our state park pass to good use this year as we have been frequenting the beach at Ft. Zach, another favorite of the summer. In fact, we never tire of attending birthday parties for the kids in Kathy’s school and the beach is one of the more popular party spots and we were back again later in the week to celebrate the 3rd birthday of one of Kathy’s future students, Georgia.

It was another fun time watching the kids play in the water and along the beach and being able to watch Georgia and her family and friends enjoy the birthday party. For a couple without kids, we spend a lot of time going to kids’ parties and events. All the fun without the fuss.

Summer also allows for smaller, more intimate get-togethers like the wonderful pool party hosted by our friends Elena & Haven. We were able to kick back, take a swim, play with the dog and hold actual conversations with friends that seemed neither cursory nor rushed like those at the larger in season gatherings.





My work has been going well, RPM Nautical is in the midst of another successful summer and right out of the box, we discovered a Greek wreck in Albania to start the season. RPM is now on twitter and facebook and you can keep updated on our finds on either forum. I am also now on both facebook and twitter as well, though Kathy continues to disavow on-line social networking.
