There are a ton of Fantasy Fest events, more being added each year, but some have actually been around since the beginning and one of these is the annual Headdress Ball which is celebrating 25 years this year. The event is the premier event for Key West’s Gay & Lesbian community and harkens back to the original founding of Fantasy Fest as a party and fundraiser for the Key West Business Guild.

This year the party was held in a new location, the Southernmost Hotel and Matt & Carrie at Southernmost went all out, bringing in a huge big-top tent that allowed a huge increase in the number of potential attendees. Neither Kathy nor I had been to the Ball in more than 10 years and we figured it was about time we returned to check it out. Kathy wanted to wear her Flamingo costume, which features a nice head-piece.

There was a huge crowd and we ran into a number of our friends, but I must admit that we both recall the costumes being much more spectacular back in the day. There were some great Headdresses for sure, but my guess is most of the best costume designers hold out for the larger exposure and more lucrative prizes of Pretenders in Paradise.

Fantasy Fest float building is making excellent progress over at Dave’s place. Rick & Steve have begun to build their portion of the float and Dave’s Global Warming monster is growing each day. The entire thing is really starting to come together. Kudos to all those who have been busy working on the float. It really is a ton of work, and Kathy & I have been too busy to help out much this year. The town seems really busy and abuzz this year, it seems like traffic is already becoming heavy and downtown is bustling already.
