Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving
Kathy and I have been loath to travel during the holidays
lately, there is just too much traffic, crowds and confusion. Airline delays
become nightmare scenarios which we would rather avoid altogether by just
staying home and enjoying the holidays together and with our friends here in
Key West. This Thanksgiving is a perfect example, because as much as we would
enjoy spending it with family, there is something comforting and wonderful
about just staying home.
Though by staying home, I mean not traveling and not holing
up in our house. In fact we had two wonderful invitations to share Thanksgiving
with friends that we took advantage of this year. We started the day off at our
friends Nadene and Trevor who along with their daughter Meredith have an annual
Thanksgiving Day Parade Brunch that we love.
There is always a wonderful selection of food and beverages,
but it is the wonderful company that we enjoy the most, so many of our friends
are there and it is so fun just to hang out, catch up and just enjoy the
company of really wonderful people. We are so fortunate to have a collection of
some of the best friends ever and we certainly are thankful for their roles in
our life.
For dinner we were at another amazing gathering, this time
at the home of our friends Tom and Greta, it is yet another wonderful, relaxed,
enjoyable and fun gathering of friends. This year they had a theme of “A Bacon
Thanksgiving” and almost all of the food, even the yummy deserts had some
combination of bacon included. It was a delicious twist on the traditional
Thanksgiving Feast.
The weekend after Thanksgiving, Kathy and I were headed back
to Miami, where we had tickets to see two Elton John concerts, one on Friday Night
at the BB& T Center in Ft. Lauderdale and one on Saturday night at the
American Airlines Arena. In addition to the concerts, we had time during the
day to explore Miami a little.
We started in Coconut Grove where our friend Darci and Kevin
happened to be in town for the weekend as well, so we met them for brunch. For
some reason, it is always fun to meet with friends from home in another place
and we enjoyed a wonderful brunch before checking out the Barnacle State Park
in Coconut Grove. The Barnacle is a small park that is the restored home of one
of the earliest settlers of Dade County.
It is beautiful home and strip of land on the shore of
Biscayne Bay, a tiny natural refuge amongst the massive buildings, hotels and
condos that have sprung up all around it. For some reason, neither, Kathy or I
had ever been there, even though it is literally right in the middle of Coconut
Grove, a place we have visited many, many times.
We also spent time in the Wynwood Arts District, visiting
the Wynwood Brewery and walking around the area and checking out the crazy
collections of murals and graffiti that cover almost every wall in the area.
The artwork is constantly changing and my guess is the work we saw is living on
borrowed time with the massive Art Basel show and Miami Art week coming up
soon.
