Zombie Zombie

Zombie Zombie

The actual 10th anniversary Zombie Bike Ride started right on time at 6 PM Sunday evening. There were so freaking many Zombies that the official start line was sort of crashed by hundreds of Zombies who actually had to start in advance of the line because there simply was not enough room to accommodate them all. I think it was easily the largest crowd to ever partake in the event as it was incredibly packed.

Jen, Martina and Kathy

Kathy had worked hard all week creating her costume as a Zombie Purple Minion, she was joining a large group of purple minions as part of the group sponsored by our gym WebeFit. I opted not to get dressed up or painted this year, choosing instead to just be part of the group of photographers documenting the event. Kathy looked amazing as she once again did her own make-up and costume creating yet another beautiful zombie masterpiece.

The ride follows a route that is about four miles long from East Martello to lower Duval Street where there were any number of official Zombie afterparties at a variety of bars. The route travels along South Roosevelt Boulevard and basically follows the shore, past Salute and the Casa Marina before heading down Reynold Street to South and then on to Duval, where the ride travels basically the length of Duval culminating somewhere near Sloppy Joe’s.

We made a few stops along the way, most notably at our friend Heather’s guest house, The Wicker Guesthouse on Duval Street where they were hosting a viewing party to watch the madness pass by. The zombie caravan stretches back for miles and takes upwards of three hours to pass by completely, way longer than the main Fantasy Fest parade.

Thousands of people lined the complete route as people seem to love coming out to see Zombies, viewership has grown almost as well as participation and it really has become one of the signature events of the year in Key West. Many families and kids break off the ride before it gets downtown as it does tend to get a little crazier the closer it gets to lower Duval and the parties that follow the ride are often off the hook.

Much of lower Duval Street and the off shoots in downtown are simply overwhelmed by the sheer number of bikes and riders and the police just close the streets down. The massive gathering outside of the Tiki Hut was the largest mass and where most of the largest bicycle creations park after the ride, making it Zombie Party Central.

Kathy and our friends (and fellow minions) Martina and Jen grabbed a bite to eat at one of the afterparties at the Smokin’ Tuna and then walked around through the chaos for a bit before heading home, it was after all, a Sunday night and we all had to work bright and early on Monday. The party continued long into the night as the thousands of zombie revelers celebrated another fantastic year.

Krystin and Morgan

It was a just about perfect way to kick off what is always one of the most fun and craziest weeks in Key West and had us looking forward to much more fun as the week progressed. Already looking forward to next year’s 11th annual Zombie Bike Ride.
