Sitting in the Shade

Key West is an arts community and thankfully and happily, we are big supporters of the arts, the visual arts, theatre, music and more there is plenty happening when it comes to the art scene in Key West. It seems as though every night there is some artistic endeavor that we can go see and or participate in, often there are multiple options on the same evening and we try our best to get out and support these things, especially as is often the case when we have friends involved.

This was the case this month when our friend Kate Divoll was one of three local artists featured in the Studios of Key West’s monthly art opening. With the season winding down, this show had a very different feel to it, perhaps because it was crowded with locals as many snowbirds have already departed for their Northern homes.

The show featured three local artists, each are friends of ours, the aforementioned Kate, as well as Lucy Paige and Rick Worth (who is the artist who painted our flowered car). This show attracted a ton of local interest as Worth is especially popular in town and Lucy and Kate each drew their own crowds as well. It was especially cool to see so many young people, mostly friends of the youthful Miss Divoll to a show at the Studios. It had a hipper and much younger vibe than many of the shows there,

It is always fun hanging out at openings, especially at The Studios of Key West, they have an awesome staff and at every event there, tons of cool Key Westers show up and celebrate whatever is happening there, it is doubly fun when it is our friends who are involved in the show. This is equally true at just about any venue around town and a case in point is the recent production of Legally Blonde Jr. at the Key West Theater.

The production starring students from the Key West High School and produced and directed by the capable and talented Juliet Grey and Alex Zeto, was a rousing success and while we may not know a lot of the students, we certainly know a lot of the parents. Kathy and I were happy sponsors of the play, and though Kathy could not attend because she was out in Colorado overseeing the landscaping of our new home there, I still went with our friend Gae and had a great time.

The theater was packed and close to sold out which was really cool for the students and it was great to see so many of the local theatre community out to support the kids. The play was really fantastic as they all did a fantastic job. It was a ton of fun, here’s hoping to many more KWHS productions at the Theater.

With Kathy gone, I also flew solo to the 50th birthday surprise sail for our friend Betsy. The sail was a complete surprise as poor Betsy had no idea, even to the point she was boarding the vessel quite what was going on. Why were her friends and family (even those from out of town) doing on a sunset sail that her husband Eric had just happened to lead her by on their way to an alleged dinner?

It was a great evening on the water with some truly wonderful friends. Betsy and her family are amazing and it was a perfect night for the sunset sail aboard the Fury catamaran, which accommodated the crowd with ease. The food was yummy and the drinks flowed freely and I had a great time. Happy 50th Betsy and congrats to Eric for pulling off a near perfect surprise.
