Rest

We returned to Marshfield along with the rain, at times torrential which has blanketed this area for the past few days; it’s not a problem as we had planned to take a day or two to decompress and get things like laundry, paying bills and general automotive maintenance done anyway. Being on the road for months at a time does not stop the responsibilities of ones day to day lives and though we tried to arrange automatic bill paying as much as possible, there are some things that just need to be done. Our car which has now traveled over 5000 miles is working great, but we took the opportunity of stopping to get an oil change and a new set of tires.

Our trip from Old Orchard Beach back was easy and enjoyable. We made a couple of stops, stopping in Kennebunkport for breakfast, then at the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells, Maine. Rachel Carson is one of my heroes, her books on the Ocean and the classic, Silent Spring, which documented the effects of pesticide on shore birds, fostered my love for the ocean. Visiting the seashore that gave her inspiration was special to me.

On our way back through Boston, we visited the Franklin Park Zoo. As members of the Miami Metrozoo, we are able to get free admission to many zoos and aquariums throughout the country as part of a reciprocal agreement and the Franklin Park Zoo was the first time we used it. We got caught in a huge thunderstorm, but that did not deter us from seeing most of the small zoo. It is not the most impressive place, but it provided a nice diversion and a final stop before getting back to Marshfield.

The rain is continuing, but we plan to get out again today and explore the area here some more, before heading to Cape Cod tomorrow for at least a day, perhaps two before beginning the next leg of our trip and heading south.
